Videoland strengthens streaming position by acquiring the operations of Viaplay Netherlands
Videoland is taking a major strategic step to realise its growth ambitions. The Dutch streaming service is expanding its portfolio with the sports rights and programming of Viaplay Netherlands. With this move, Videoland is transforming from the premier home of local entertainment, series and films into the ultimate destination for both premium entertainment and live sports.
While Videoland is currently renowned for its strong Dutch content, the platform will soon be enriched with premium live sports, including Formula 1, English Premier League football and international darts tournaments (PDC Darts). Expanding into live sports has long been an ambition, aimed at establishing Videoland as the most relevant streaming service in the Netherlands, offering a complete selection for the entire family.
Ellen van den Berghe, Streaming Director at DPG Media: "It has long been our ambition to build a strong second pillar in sports alongside our entertainment offering. Watching sports together is deeply rooted in Dutch culture, and that experience is rapidly shifting towards streaming. With the programmes, sports rights and platform that Viaplay has successfully established in the Netherlands, we can bring a fantastic sports offering to Videoland. This step allows us to continue building a future-proof Dutch streaming platform capable of competing with the largest international players.”
The expansion of Videoland's portfolio will be achieved through DPG Media's intention to acquire the operations of Viaplay Netherlands. Following the completion of this acquisition, the sports rights and programming of the Nordic streaming service will be carefully integrated into Videoland. For current Viaplay subscribers, nothing will change for the time being; they will retain full access to their current subscription and the familiar app.
Viaplay Netherlands currently employs approximately 50 staff members, all of whom will transfer to DPG Media. The acquisition remains subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions.
