The 2017 financial year closed positively for De Persgroep. The operating income of the media company, which is active in the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark, remained stable at over 1.45 billion euros. The operating profit before depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) came to 216 million euros, while the net current profit was 109 million euros. With 21 million euros, the group had virtually no net financial debt on the balance sheet at the end of the year under review.
At the end of 2017 De Persgroep took an important strategic step in Belgium with the 100% acquisition of the audiovisual company Medialaan (television, radio, mobile, internet). Together with the group´s publishing activities (de Persgroep Publishing), an integrated multimedia company is being built that has all the strengths to become an online and offline leader in the consumer and advertising market. The convergence of all media forms on the internet plays an essential role in this quest.
In addition, major advances were made in the digital transformation in all three countries, says CEO Christian Van Thillo: ‘Our group is investing heavily in the digital platforms of its news media. The need for high-quality, reliable online journalism is growing daily - and more and more people are also willing to pay for it. In the meantime our group has almost 300,000 digital subscribers, and that number continues to rise. Our efforts on that level are starting to really bear fruit.’
‘We’ve also been investing in new video platforms and online video content, made for mobile use. This year even more great innovations will be launched that will support further growth. 2018 began promisingly and excellent results have been booked, but the further transformation of the group remains the absolute priority’, notes Van Thillo.
